If you ever check YouTube from my account then probably, in the search history, all you’ll find is inspirational speeches and book recommendations. There might be 10% chance of you finding a new song or an episode of The Timeliners. It wasn’t untill a week earlier, I realized that I’m kind of addicted to all these videos and it’s become my daily routine to watch these. All videos say more or less the same thing and I know that, still I don’t know why, daily I watch a video or two atleast.
No addiction is good. All harm us in similar ways through different mediums.
This addiction of watching inspirational videos might be considered as a good one, because after all, it’s enhancing my knowledge and self confidence day-by-day. But it’s harmful as well, in ways you can’t think it would harm you.
Are you ready to be dependent?
So watching these self help videos and all daily motivation videos boosts your confidence right? Then what on earth does my sub topic mean? How can it make you dependent? It’s supposed to do just the opposite, making you happily independent and confident. And it does. But, only for a short while. I’m sure if you have been watching these videos on a daily bases, without much thought then you haven’t noticed this effect. But if you give it a few days gap and you feel the urge to open your YouTube and make yourself productive by watching these videos of people who have splendid communication skills and can motivate you and make you love them by uploading a 20min video, then you are addicted. The sooner you realize the better. These videos will make you crave for more. And if it was some other addiction then the guilty feeling would’ve been high but watching inspirational videos make you reason yourself that “Oh come on man, just a 20 min video, I’m not playing videogames or watching movies, I’m utilizing my time by watching stuff that will enhance my potential.” Now this reason cools off your guilty mind and you find it easier to ignore that little voice that’s coming from the core of your heart.
Low Self esteem
Now since you become dependent on these videos, you feel more energetic and it helps you boost your motivation and self confidence levels above than the regular level of self confidence you have. But then that a good thing right? Yes…and no. Yes because it motivates you to do the task you need to complete currently. And NO because it only momentarily motivates you. After some time when you feel your motivation level decrease (back to normal) then you think that you’re becoming less self confident than your normal self. You see? Our original self motivation seems less to us after not watching a video or two for a long time. You start to think that your normal level of confidence is less. I know that it’s good to boost your confidence but at the same time we need to remember that this has to be done slowly by changing our thought process not with the help of self help videos.
Comparing with others or yourself?
All Self help videos motivate us to become the way that is considered ideal. In many ways they try help us
change transform into an ideal person. But when the self help videos idealize a particular person then we start comparing ourselves to the person talked about. Result? Since the person talked about is usually a very successful and popular one, we start changing ourselves. We are so focussed in changing ourselves to be like that person that we even change that one thing, that sets us apart from the rest of the world. That thing which we (probably) were proud of before we came to know that it’s not one of the qualities that the “successful person” has. We start idealizing him/her (which is good to some extent), which makes us forget our identity, our passions, our purpose.
From what I’ve heard, everyone has a different purpose and watching these videos might even help you to recognize it but a side-effect might also be, you forgetting your identity. So I won’t tell you what’s the limit to stop yourselves and when you start getting addicted because it’s upon you to realize it (different people have different effects and tolerance). Watching these videos can be life changing but there is always a limit to the things we do. The sooner you realize the better.
