Periods are normal.

Ever since I started menstruating, I was conditioned to believe that guys have no idea about this stuff and they shouldn’t be involved in such talks. I often wondered the reason behind this bizarre belief. Like why should they not know about something so common? But since I was only a kid, I didn’t voice it out. But as I grew older, the idea of being “quiet” about something as normal as periods started to seem absurd.

In some backward areas there have been incidents when school teachers ignored the chapters of puberty and adolescence, because they think it’s “weird” and “girls should not know about it”. I was watching a YouTube video where the lady said that she and all her girl friends didn’t turn up in school when they were being taught about women’s genetics and periods, because they felt embarrassed.

Women are considered too open and too loud for being open about menstruation. But, I think it’s fucking normal. I think asking for pads in public isn’t a crime. I think having mood swings in that time of the month is completely valid.

Ladies, it’s not something to feel awkward or uncomfortable about. It’s a natural feminine trait about which you can talk without feeling shy. You don’t need to talk in hushed whispers about periods. You don’t need to feel hesitent while visiting a male gynae. Your reproductive system, like all other systems, is a part of you. It’s not something you need to feel embarrassed about.

  1. Quite an awesome raw way to portray human anatomy. At the end of the day we humans are the one who associate emotions with human flesh and blood, and most of the time we associate it with a wrong perspective. Keep up the amazing work Arushi.

I completely agree with this post. I hate when people try to make me feel as though it’s something that I shouldn’t talk about. It’s normal. Every woman deals with it. Why do we treat it as shameful?
